Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has directed former Local Government Area Chairmen whose tenures have expired to hand over all government property in their possession to the Directors of Administration in their respective local government areas.
The governor ordered that all handover and takeover formalities must be concluded on or before the close of work on Monday, October 5, 2026.
The directive followed the expiration of the tenure of Local Government Chairmen and Councillors across the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmas Iwu.
According to the statement, the former chairmen are expected to formally hand over government property and other official assets under their care to the Directors of Administration in their respective councils.
The state government also clarified that former local government officials who wish to contest in the forthcoming local government elections are free to indicate their interest.
However, such individuals must fulfil all requirements stipulated by the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).
Governor Uzodimma, on behalf of the Imo State Government and the people of the state, expressed appreciation to the former chairmen and councillors for their services and contributions during their tenure.
The governor's directive effectively marks the end of the tenure of the outgoing local government officials as the state prepares for the next phase of the local government electoral process.
